Thuringowa Library
Thuringowa Library is a significant focal point of the Thuringowa community, providing a hub with books, reference materials, computer facilities, internet access and literacy training. It also contains a rich history of the local area.
Through an extension to and refurbishment of the existing building, PDT Architects created a high-tech, friendly and flexible library facility. The need for adaptability and flexibility is very important in contemporary library design. By creating a range of spaces and by using modular, moveable furniture, the library can cater for a wide range of users.
Only a small amount of additional area was constructed and this was done in a way that complemented the existing architecture. The refurbished library was planned as a series of individual spaces defined through differing volumes, materials and quality of light, linked by a ‘street’ allowing clear circulation routes and offering easy navigation, information and communication.
The ‘street’ provides access to (and separation between) the Information Hall, Café, Family Area, Kids Room and Lounge. Collection stacks line the street to form the ‘walls’ of the Lounge.
The entry lounge can be used ‘out of hours’ for events, displays or meetings. Similarly, the meeting rooms and learning lounge have separate access increasing and extending the learning opportunities for library users.
The Café has been located on the edge of the building where it can serve both internal library spaces and the adjacent covered external space. It can operate with independent opening times and cater for external and ‘out of hours’ events and activities.
The lobby incorporates a mini art gallery and various other display pieces were designed where new books, rare books, or other items of interest can be safely exhibited. The majority of the furniture for this project was purpose designed and built.
The choice of materials and colours within the library is muted. There is a large amount of visual information required in a library and a great deal of colour and texture in the collection itself. The intent has been to create a subtle background to allow the collections and activities to be prominent. The colours and textures work with the lighting systems to enhance the different atmospheres of each space.
This project was largely an interior design exercise for the architectural team. A specialist library consultant and a food service specialist were included in the team. There was a small structural component where the lobby was amended with new built area, a mechanical component in which the existing air conditioning was adapted and re-balanced, and a new lighting design created. The IT component was carried out by in-house staff from the Thuringowa Council. We also included an access consultant to ensure barrier free design was implemented across all aspects.
The response to this building has been overwhelmingly positive, from the client, users of the facility and the general public, reinforcing Thuringowa Library’s place as a special hub for the community.
