PDT Architects was engaged by Education Queensland for the Master Planning, Design and Procurement of new facilities for Western Cape College. Situated in Far North Queensland, the school’s design and documentation was undertaken to satisfy a fast track programme in a remote location, with a unique set of conditions.

New school facilities included two new Y4-6 Classroom Blocks, related Amenities Block, and a Y7-12 GLA Block for specialist curriculum learning. New Covered Walkways link these new facilities with the existing P-12 College Campus and related outdoor break-out and play spaces. These outdoor spaces are generally shaded, and protected from the very hot conditions by canopy trees or freestanding shade structures.

Use of cost effective, single storey, cyclone-proof construction, with pre-finished materials, and fitout components, was critical to meet the tight time frames. Use of coloured banding in corrugated metal wall cladding and related finishes provides Architectural interest and helps to identify the various GLA Blocks. Internally, use of painted coloured feature walls, joinery elements, a mix of carpet and vinyl floor coverings, acoustic ceiling tiles, and large window openings provides students and staff with bright and colourful teaching spaces.

All classrooms and associated spaces are generally air conditioned, in accordance with Education Queensland requirements. Alternatively, large window openings and ceiling fans provide more cost effective ventilation. All buildings incorporate large overhangs and window screening.

Further external landscape works also included relocation of the Croc Fest Stage, Sports Oval facilities, and creation of a new Outdoor play Area as part of the Y4-6 Precinct.
