Edmonton Cyclone Shelter Centre

The Edmonton Cyclone Shelter & Sports Centre is a dual-purpose facility that provides a hub for the local community and a shelter in the event of a cyclone storm surge. The centre can provide shelter up to 1,500 people and is designed and constructed to meet category 5 wind loading standards.

PDT Architects was appointed to design a functional and flexible multi-purpose sport and leisure centre for the Cairns community, with low ongoing costs and allow for future expansion. During the design process, the design team were asked to amend the original design to meet Queensland Cyclone shelter guidelines, with additional amenities added to cater for increased occupancy.

Facilities in the centre include double indoor sports hall, futsal court, health and fitness studio, multi-purpose event spaces, meeting rooms, gym, administration area and car park.
