Pdt celebrates landscape architecture

At pdt, we endeavour to work efficiently, effectively and economically as a team. Our successful track record in delivering quality projects on time and within budget is partly due to understanding and supporting our multidisciplinary teams. We promote this knowledge by holding a week-long campaign to celebrate and educate staff on the unique benefits of each of our disciplines.

Our latest campaign is landscape architecture week which will run from 7 to 11 November in conjunction with national recycling week. The campaign will include games, recycling trivia competitions and lunchtime information sessions with expert speakers from both pdt and external consultants that will cover: 1) How to create a green wall and 2) The Gold Coast University Hospital: a landscape case study.

By the end of the week our staff will have an understanding of the full range of benefits that landscape architecture offers our clients and the community.

Pdt supports Green Building Week

Pdt has joined forces with Green Building Council Australia to highlight the challenges of tackling global climate change while meeting local priorities as part of World Green Building Week 19-25 September.

Our week-long event program is set to inspire and engage pdt staff on environmental sustainable design and ethical practices. Activities include a passive design competition, recycled paper origami craft, and watching instructive ESD videos.

The highlight of the week will be a presentation by Rosemary Kennedy Director at QUT’s Centre for Sub-Tropical Design. Rosemary will speak on ‘sustainable design for a sub-tropical climate’ and this lunch seminar will be open to pdt staff, clients, and consultants.

On the final day we will be holding a team competition to recreate an architectural icon from general office and home recycled materials.

The Corso at North Lakes, project managed by Ridgemill for Moreton Bay Regional Council, represents an exciting investment in the future of the North Lakes community and offers a number of opportunities for public interaction and self-expression. On 21 May 2011, pdt’s concept designs for the proposed public library, young people’s space and new community centre were released to the public. The community consultation sessions were an overwhelming success with the almost 100 per cent of feedback revealing that, overall, North Lakes residents like the proposed development.

HMAS Ipswich Naval Tribute Unveiled

Built to complement the naval memorial site in Queens Park, Ipswich, the new tribute to the HMAS Ipswich II, was launched to the public in May. Pdt landscape architectural team, led by Nathan Clausen and Cassandra Rose, completed detailed documentation of a formal garden by Elizabeth Jackson Principal Officer (Open Space Design) at Ipswich City Council. The design augments the site and frames the vessel's Bofors gun display. The design of the structure represents the bow of a ship complete with rails reflecting those on the actual HMAS Ipswich II. History of the ship, along with battle honours, and the names of the other Fremantle Class Patrol Boats, are etched into the paving upon which the Bofors gun and breakwater sit. One of the main objectives of the design was to protect the Bofors gun for posterity and to serve as a reminder of the ship's role in the protection of our waters.

The new $1.76 billion, nine storey Gold Coast University Hospital is on track for completion in December 2012. Once complete, the landmark hospital will deliver a full range of health services to one of the fastest growing areas in Australia.

Townsville RSL Stadium Complete

Construction of the new Townsville RSL Stadium was put to the test earlier this year as the site experienced a near hit from cyclone Yasi. Fortunately the buildings structure, which has been designed to withstand a category 5 cyclone, was sufficiently advanced to withstand the onslaught.

The recently completed Seaside Museum at Bribie Island celebrates local people, places and stories; offering an appealing tourism destination and unique function and event facility for the Queensland community.

Its design is subtle yet striking; a white diagonal bulkhead positioned for sweeping views across the sea, beach and park cleverly blends with hardwood timber floors, high and low windows, and timber slats to create a sense of transparency and connection to the site.
